Navarro Wrestlers Shine at UIL District 13-5A Championships
The Austin Navarro wrestling program delivered a strong overall performance at the UIL District 13-5A Championships, with both the girls and boys teams earning podium finishes, valuable team points, and top-four results against a deep and competitive field.
Highlighting the program’s success, Coach Ramsey was named Girls Coach of the Year, a testament to her leadership and the continued growth of the Navarro girls wrestling program. “Coach Ramsey’s commitment to athlete development and team culture continues to elevate Navarro wrestling at the district and postseason levels.”
Girls Wrestling Results
The Navarro girls turned in an impressive showing, finishing 4th overall as a team, powered by multiple medalists and consistent scoring across weight classes.
Leading the way was Anizel Patino Lopez (140 lbs), who earned a second-place district finish. Patino Lopez advanced to the finals after securing a semifinal fall over Crockett.
Navarro also collected several third-place finishes.
At 145 pounds, Yamilet Duenez Fernandez fought through the consolation bracket to claim third place, winning both matches by fall—including a 46-second pin in the third-place match.
Gaby Ramirez Castelan (130 lbs) earned third place after opening with a first-round fall and closing the tournament with a decisive win in the third-place match.
Gracy Carreto (120 lbs) added a third-place finish, while Jonnell Montalvo (235 lbs) battled back for third place in the heavyweight division.
Additional contributors included Kimberly Morataya (190 lbs), who placed fifth, along with Sophia Gonzalez (100 lbs) and Ana Napoles Duputey (115 lbs), who each placed sixth and showed resilience throughout the tournament. Yeliana Patino Lopez (135 lbs) gained valuable postseason experience competing against top-ranked opponents.
Boys Wrestling Results
On the boys side, Navarro also saw strong individual performances highlighted by multiple podium finishes.
At 138 pounds, David Perez delivered a standout performance, earning third place. Perez opened the tournament with a major decision victory before battling back through the consolation bracket, securing a fall and ultimately winning the third-place match by injury default. Neveon Shaw (175 lbs) also claimed third place, showcasing dominance in the consolation rounds with both a fall and a major decision to close the tournament. At 144 pounds, Nathan Cates picked up a first-round fall and gained valuable experience.
Regional Qualifiers
As a result of their district performances, seven Navarro wrestlers qualified for regional competition:
Yamilet Duenez Fernandez, Gracy Carreto, Gaby Ramirez Castelan, Anizel Patino Lopez, David Perez, and Neveon Shaw.
Kimberly Morataya was named a regional alternate.
Strong Program Momentum
Across both divisions, Navarro wrestlers demonstrated toughness, growth, and competitive grit, with multiple athletes earning podium finishes and the girls team securing a top-four district finish. The results reflect the continued upward momentum of the Navarro wrestling program as it advances into postseason competition.
