FRESHMAN WRESTLER ADVANCES TO STATE!
Austin Navarro Wrestlers Compete at UIL Region 4-5A Championships
Austin Navarro wrestlers faced elite competition at the UIL Region 4-5A Championships, with both the boys and girls teams gaining valuable postseason experience while representing the program with grit on the regional stage.
At 175 pounds, Neveon Shaw (15-11) rebounded from a first-round loss with a strong pin in the consolation bracket before his tournament run ended in round two, showcasing determination and continued growth.
Competing at 145 pounds, Yamilet Duenez Fernandez (13-9) delivered one of the Vikings’ strongest performances of the tournament. After dropping her opening match, Duenez Fernandez rallied with two consecutive falls in the consolation bracket, advancing deep into the rounds.
The highlight of the tournament came at 235 pounds, where rookie freshman Jonnell Montalvo (20-9) put together an outstanding run to earn second place. Montalvo secured three straight falls, including a lightning-quick semifinal pin, to advance to the regional finals. Her impressive performance earned her a spot at the UIL State Championships, marking a major milestone early in her high school career.
Other Austin Navarro competitors gained valuable regional experience, including Ana Napoles Duputey (115), Gracy Carreto (120), Gaby Ramirez Castelan (130), Anizel Patino Lopez (140), and David Perez (138), all of whom faced tough draws against seasoned opponents.
Looking Ahead
With a mix of veteran leadership and emerging young talent, Austin Navarro continues to build momentum in its wrestling program. The Vikings now turn their focus to the UIL State Championships, where freshman standout Jonnell Montalvo will represent the school on the state’s biggest stage.
