Boys Soccer Win District Opener 4-3

BOYS SOCCER WIN DISTRICT OPENER 4-3

Navarro 4-3 Northeast G: Ricky Hernandez, Roli Diengo, Ruben Vences, Josue Montalvan A: Andy Madrid, Josue, Rodrigo Suarez, Diego Stauffer MOTM: Josue Boys Soccer won a thriller to get their district campaign off to a winning start. It was the first Lanier-Reagan derby to be played with the new school names: Navarro and Northeast, and the intensity on the field combined with the noise from the crowd showed that both sides knew what was at stake. The Vikings built two goal leads on three occasions in this match (2-0, 3-1, and 4-2) but the Raiders battled back each time to stay within touching distance. In the end, the Vikings were able to hold on for a hard-fought victory. Navarro started well, going up 2-0 after twenty minutes. Ricky Hernandez's headed opener finished a pinpoint accurate cross from Andy Madrid, and Roli Diengo's breakaway finish was set up by Josue Montalvan. Northeast found the net before halftime though to pull within 2-1. In the 2nd half, Ruben Vences finished first time on a gorgeous through ball from Rodrigo Suarez in the opening stages extending the lead to 3-1. After Norheast pegged back again, Josue Montalvan ran onto a Diego Stauffer header before lobbing the keeper from an impossibly difficult angle. See the highlights below to fully appreciate the quality of the finish.
