Last night the Lanier Viking Wrestling team hosted the Crockett Cougars, LBJ Jaguars, and Northeast Raiders for our final home quad of the season. We also recognized 5 seniors for the Vikings. The boys faced tough wrestlers, Oscar Gonzalez, Gabriel Garcia, and Jose Santos all battled tough but came up short in their matches. Senior Captain Sebastian Santos came out to get a win for the team after watching his teammates come up short, Sebastian pinned his opponent from Crockett in the 1st round to add another win to his record this season. Captain David Gatari defeated L. Mata from LBJ with a disqualification but was ahead 2-1. The Lady Vikings came out to defend their home mat. Janet Rodriguez added another win with a major upset against her opponent V. Green from Crockett. Janet has battled against Green many times this year coming up short but not today. Janet took the win using a cradle to pin Green in the third period. As a coach I am super proud of this wrestler, her goal was to defeat Green and now she has!! 1st year wrestler Maribel Quintana beat J. Dennis in over time. Even after disputes about the score Maribel pushed through and fought for the last takedown to secure her win. Senior Captain Sabrina Govea came out to please the crowd and continues to improve her technical abilities. She had a textbook takedown and worked her butcher for the pin. The 3 girls finalized the win against Crockett 15-6 The coaching staff was very proud of the team performance as we continue to take on tough opponents on our way to prepare for the district tournament next week. We have a young team and will take 5 girls and 7 boys to District. We look forward to seeing this team shine!
