VIKINGS WRESTLING ADVANCE TO REGIONALS

On February 6th, the Viking Wrestling Team traveled to Delco Center in order to compete in the District 13 - 5A tournament. 1 Varsity boy, and 5 Varsity girls competed in the tournament to try and earn their ticket to the regional tournament next week. We also had 7 JV boys compete as well. David Gatari was the solo Varsity boy to compete for the Vikings. He started of with a solid win with a pin defeating T. Tweedel for McCallum. He was then challenged by #1 seed E. Hicks of Dripping Springs and R. Zamora of Travis. David took 4th place to earn his ticket to Regionals. The Lady Vikings came out strong and determined with only having 5 of the 10 Varsity weight classes. Even giving up team points by not having all the weights, the Lady Viks claimed the District runner up title with 77 points losing to Glenn at 133 points. All 5 Lady Vikings gained their tickets to Regionals! First year wrestler Maribel Quintana and Faustina Cervantes started the team off right with a pin each in the first round. Maribel then but up a showed her next competitors what it meant to go against a Viking but ultimately feel short to #1 seed C. King of Cedar Park and M Alvear of Leander Glenn. Maribel gained her ticket with 4th place. Faustina showed her grit and determination by defeating L. Hammond of Dripping Spring after a tough loss to M. Mohler of Leander Glenn gaining 3rd place. Ezabella Solano took District runner up after defeating J. Dennis of Crockett and losing to K. Lea of Leander Glenn. Bella has shown great improvement and almost caught Glenn in a butcher but was just shy of finishing the move. Senior Captain Sabrina Govea claimed her District Championship title defeating her rival A. Luckie of Northeast with just 1 point and S. Vazquez of Leander Glenn with 3 points. The JV Boys did a great job with wins that surprised not only coach but themselves with a 5th place team finish. Martin Rivera took 6th place. Martin was ready to meet his goal and get his win and he did defeating P. Grabbe of Cedar Park. Oscar Gonzalez had some tough matches but came out with a win against R. Green of Cedar Park and took 6th place. Micheal Hernandez fought hard for his 1st tournament but came up short against his opponents. Jose Santos took 3rd place with wins by falls against LBJ, Cedar Park, and Glenn. Jose showed he can over come his opponents with clean technical moves. Gabriel Garcia has improved over the season and even after tough matches he has a smile on his face and looks forward to next season. Senior Captain Sebastian Santos sweep through the competition for 1st place with all pins against Lampasas, Rouse, and Cedar Park. Ramon Sanchez took 5th place after showing some grit and beating Dripping Springs and losing to Glenn. Overall the Coaches were very proud of each individual on this team, 6 Wrestlers were entered into the Varsity tournament, and ALL of them are regional qualifiers. Our very own Coach Ramsey tied with the Coach from Glenn for District Girls Head Coach of the Year voted for by the coaches. The Viking Wrestling team is focused on getting back on the mat in order to focus and prepare for the Regional Tournament next Friday, February 14th at the Delco Center.
