VIKING WRESTLERS STATE BOUND
The Navarro Viking Wrestling Team traveled to the AISD Delco Center over the weekend to compete in the UIL 5A Region 4 Wrestling tournament. With 35 schools from San Antonio to the Valley competed in the tournament. The Vikings had 1 boy and 5 girls compete in the tournament to try and earn their way into the UIL State Tournament.
David peeked at the right time placing top 8 in 5A Region 4. He wrestled 2 tough matches on the first day losing to M. Libiran of Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial but came back and defeated R. Zamora of Travis with a score of 10-4, after losing to Zamora at District. David showed his determination on the second day wrestling his heart out against K. Sistrunk of Cedar Park losing just by 1 point. David has come along way this year and is already setting his goals for next season.
Five lady vikings entered into the tournament, 3 veteran wrestlers and two rookies. Senior Rookie Faustina Cervates (138) won her 1st match at Regional's by fall against B. Villegas of San Antonio Highlands. She then encountered tough matches up against J. Carriera of Corpus Christi King and B. Lopez of PSJA Memorial, she came up short but showed great toughness overall. Sophomore Ezabella Solanotook a hard defeat against I. Peralez of PSJA memorial in the 1st round. Bella had a rematch against K. Lea of Leander Glenn coming up short with a 9-4 loss. Bella caught Lea in a butcher and almost got the pin just wasn’t able to finish it up. She has had a tough season but has great potential.
Junior Rookie Maribel Quintana had a rough start and lost her first match against A. Flores of Beeville. She was able to bounce back and win 2 in a row against A. Canales of San Antonio Verterans Memorial and N. Trevino of Donna to keep her hopes for the state tournament alive. Unfortunately, she came up just short and suffered a tough loss in the consolation quarters round. Maribel showed grit losing to B. Lopez of Edcouch-Elsa just by 1 point. She was only a few seconds away from a pin. As a 1st year wrestler she has surpassed all expectations and has earned top 8 in 5A Region 4. We are excited to see what she does next year. .
Sophomre Janet Rodriguez-Olalde placed 2nd earning her ticket to the State Tournament. Janet defeated L Valazquez of Victoria East with a Major decision (10-1) in the 1st round. In the Semifinals Janet defeated N. Quiroz of Uvalde by fall. She had a tough match against A. Arredondo of Corpus Christi Ray losing by fall. Janet wrestled through her elbow injury and getting sick. She showed that all the hard work of the season in practices has paid off.
Senior Captain Sabrina Govea came out determined to win her way into the state tournament. In the 1st round Sabrina defeated E. Leza of San Antonio Burbank with a 35 sec fall. She then defeated K. Cruz of Donna by fall in the quarterfinals. She suffered a tough loss in the semifinals against R. Scotello of San Antonio Brooks Academy and wasn’t able to bounce back in her next match losing against A. Luckie of Northeast. Sabrina was able to finish 5th place in the region with a great win by fall against S. Vazquez of Leander Glenn. She was then able to challenge K. Cruz for her ticket to State for true 4th. Sabrina dominated the match and won by fall winning her ticket to her first trip into the State Tournament.
Overall, the Viking Wrestling Program is taking 2 wrestlers to the State tournament, and each one will be working hard in order to try and earn a spot at the podium in Houston. The Lady Viks took 11th place out of 35 teams with only 5 wrestlers. The Viking wrestlers wrestled every match with determination and grit. The coaching staff could of been more proud of all of their hard work and dedication. We look forward to Sabrina and Janet continuing their season in Houston at the State Tournament.
