Lady Viking Wrestlers Advance to Regionals

LADY VIKING WRESTLERS ADVANCE TO REGIONALS

On March 10th, the Lanier Viking Wrestling Team traveled to Burger Center in order to compete in the District 14 - 5A tournament against teams from the Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, and Dripping Springs Area. 4 Varsity boys and 4 Varsity girls competed in the tournament to try and earn their ticket to the regional tournament next week. All four Lady Viking's determination has gained them the chance to wrestle at the Region 4-5A Tournament March 16-17! After the wrestling season was postponed twice this year due to Covid-19, our Vikings still showed up and put forth their best effort. Senior Captain David Gatari (113) has shown major growth throughout his high school wrestling career but came up short against his opponents from Dripping Springs and Cedar Park taking 5th place . Sophomore Oscar Gonzalez's (132) chance was cut short after an injury that took him out of the tournament. He took 6th place after defeating his opponent from Eastside by pin. Senior Curshad Ross (138) wrestled tough taking 5th place. Sophomore Ramon Sanchez (285) wrestled tough but came up short due to giving up too much weight in his weight class. The Lady Vikings were looking to fight for that district title but came up short due to only having 4 of the 10 Varsity weight classes which led to giving up team points. Even with the small numbers this year the team was able to come away with a tie for 4th place sharing it with Dripping Springs. Senior Captain Maribel Quintana (110) earned her ticket to the Regional tournament by taking 3rd place losing her tough first match to Cedar Park. Junior Rookie Katia Maldonado (138) made her way from the basketball court to show that she is a dual athlete and came away with a third-place medal in her weight class. Senior Rookie Lucia Gonzalez (148) earned 3rd place after a devastating loss to Eastside. Senior Rookie Melissa Hernandez (165) wrestled tough matches and showed her grit in order to finish 4th defeating Eastside by pin. Overall, the coaches are proud of the hard work and dedication of this team. We are stepping back on the mat to prepare the Lady Vikings for the Regional Tournament.
