VIKING WRESTLERS SHOW THEIR POTENTIAL
This past weekend, the Vikings showcased their wrestling skills at the SA Roosevelt Rough Rider Tournament, with 14 wrestlers competing and securing 20 victories overall. The team displayed impressive progress and determination across all levels.
Senior Mia Munguia had a strong performance, securing two big wins against wrestlers from SA Madison and SA Lee. Despite a heartbreaking loss to Converse Judson in the finals (where she was caught in the last 10 seconds), Munguia earned a 2nd place finish. Senior Melanie Cardona finished in 4th place after victories over Austin Akins and SA Lanier. Sophomore Layla Travino, a newcomer, took 4th place, showing significant improvement in both stamina and mental toughness.
The JV boys are progressing with each tournament. Rookie Ricardo Gonzalez went 2-2, pinning opponents from Austin McCallum and Schertz Clemens. He placed 4th despite a loss to SA Johnson. Rookie Antero Albiter continued his strong performances, placing 3rd for the second consecutive tournament with wins against Austin Akins, SA Lee, and SA Roosevelt. Both Daniel Gallegos and Jeremith Varela secured 4th place finishes, showing growth in their determination. Gustavo Franco and Derek Cabello both improved their wrestling techniques, though they faced tough competition and came up short in their matches.
The Lady Vikings also made their presence felt. Senior Captain Leslie Lopez continued her improvement, recording two pins against SA Houston and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record. Junior Michelle Ajtun, returning from a major injury last season, wrestled hard but was unable to secure any victories this time.
The Varsity boys competed fiercely. Junior Yulio Rodriguez went 1-2, with a pin over Austin McCallum. Captain David Perez faced tough opponents but lost by narrow margins. However, he defeated SA Veterans Memorial with an 8-0 win. Senior Captain Brandon Morris showed steady improvement, finishing 2-2, with wins over Austin McCallum and Schertz Clemens, though he suffered close losses to El Paso Irvin and SA Roosevelt.
The coaching staff expressed pride in the Vikings' efforts and progress. They were particularly excited about the future of the team, noting that each wrestler is improving with every match and continues to represent their school with dignity and class.
Overall, the Vikings demonstrated a strong showing and a bright future in the sport of wrestling.
